Portuguese citizenship now takes 10 years: who's affected, what still counts, what to do

On 19 May 2026, Portugal's new nationality law (Lei Orgânica n.º 1/2026) came into force. If you're American and planning the classic "five years to an EU passport" path you read about in 2023 — that path no longer exists. Here is exactly what changed, without the panic and without the sales pitch.

The five changes that matter

What this means in practice

If citizenship was your goal: a realistic timeline for an American arriving in 2026 is now card issuance (2027 at current processing speeds) + 10 years + IRN processing (historically 1–2+ years) — call it the late 2030s. Run your own dates here.

If living in Portugal was your goal: much less changed than the headlines suggest. Permanent residency still arrives at 5 years and covers indefinite stay, work, and healthcare. Most retirees never needed the passport — they needed the right to stay, which is intact.

If you hold an EU passport already (or a CPLP one): your track is 7 years, and none of the visa-side changes apply to you at all — EU free movement is untouched.

Golden Visa holders: the 7-days-a-year-to-a-passport-in-5 proposition is what this law killed. Ten years, with a test, counted from card issuance, changes that product's math entirely — worth knowing before anyone sells you a €500k fund on the old story.
