Living in Tavira as an American
Flat streets, a real hospital thirty minutes away, and rents still roughly half of Lisbon's. Tavira is the town we point people to when Lisbon has scared them and the Algarve resorts have bored them — but it is genuinely wrong for some people, and we say who at the bottom.

What it is
Tavira is a real Portuguese town that happens to be in the Algarve, and you feel the difference within ten minutes. People live here year-round. The market runs on locals, not tourists. In November it isn't empty — it's quieter, and those are not the same thing.
It's one of the few Algarve towns we'd point a 70-year-old at, and the reason is one boring detail: it's flat.
That sounds trivial until you've rented a fourth-floor walk-up in Lisbon above a street with a fourteen-percent grade. Tavira's historic centre sits on nearly level ground, and the pharmacy, market and health centre cluster within a short walk of each other. For someone at 68 with a worn knee, that isn't a detail — it's the difference between independent living and depending on a car. What it is not
There is no emergency room in town. The nearest is in Faro, roughly half an hour's drive in normal traffic — longer in August. For most things the local health centre is enough, but if you have a heart condition, those minutes belong in your decision.
There are no direct flights to the United States. From Faro you connect through Lisbon (or a hub like London), which turns a visit home into a full travel day. If you have grandchildren you want to see three times a year, that is a real cost in money and energy.
And the winter: fourteen degrees outside sounds mild, but most housing here has no central heating and thin insulation. We film that in January with a thermometer on camera, because describing it doesn't work.
